The Mount Vernon City Schools, District 80 Board of Education approves summer program

The Mount Vernon City Schools, District 80 Board of Education met March 9.

Here are the minutes as provided by Mount Vernon City Schools, District 80:

President Hoffman called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. 

The following board members answered roll call: Cleo Holt, Jaymie Nunnery, Cindy Zirkelbach, and Bree Lee. Board members absent: Merle Hollmann, Matt Reynolds, and Lora Greathouse. Also present were: Travis Morse, Greg Petersen, Sara Partridge, Superintendent Aletta Lawrence, Assistant Superintendent Ryan Swan, and Janet Miller, board secretary. 

AUDIENCE TO VISITORS Acting President Holt asked if there was anyone that wanted to address the board. No one addressed the Board. 

CONSENT AGENDA 

Acting President Holt stated that the following items would be placed on the Consent Agenda: 

Minutes of February 10 and February 29, 2016 meetings, Approval of Bills, Treasurer’s Report, Disposal of Tapes (June, 2014), Amended 2015-2016 Calendar, Graduation Date at Zadok Casey Middle School, and Authorization to Submit Annual Proposals for the Following State and Federal Programs: NCLB Consolidated, Title I N & D, PreK Preschool for All and PreK Expansion Grant, Head Start Community Assessment – Updated January 2016, Head Start Enrollment Assessment/At Risk Factors – Updated February 2016, Head Start In-Kind Procedures – Updated February 2016, Head Start FY16 Self-Assessment with Long Range Goals and Short Term Objectives, Head Start FY16 Training and Technical Assistance Plan, Head Start FY 16 Grant Application and Budget and Updated Organizational Chart, Rural and Low Income, Twenty-First Century, Secretary of State Library Grant, and located of April Board Meeting. Motion by Lee, second by Nunnery, to approve all of the above pending policy council approval, as presented. Roll Call: Ayes – Lee, Nunnery, Zirkelbach, and Holt. Nays – None. Absent – Hollmann, Greathouse, and Reynolds. Motion carried.

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT HEAD START UPDATE Superintendent Aletta Lawrence gave an update on the Head Start Program. 

SPECIAL EDUCATION REPORT 

Mrs. Jodi Cooper, Special Education Director gave a report of her program. Lora Greathouse arrived at the meeting at 6:19 p.m. 

IASB SPRING DINNER MEETING Mrs. Lawrence advised that she attended the IASB Spring Dinner Meeting. 

PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES Parent/Teacher conferences were held on February 4th and February 9th. Mrs. Lawrence gave an update. 

STATE PAYMENTS Mrs. Lawrence advised that the state owes District 80 $279,620.18. 

OLD BUSINESS 2016-2017 BOARD GOALS Motion by Lee, second by Nunnery, to approve the updated 2016-2017 Board Goals, as presented. Roll Call: Ayes – Lee, Nunnery, Greathouse, Zirkelbach, and Holt. Nays – None. Absent – Hollmann and Reynolds. Motion carried. 

SUMMER MAINTENANCE The summer maintenance preliminary list was discussed and tabled until the next Board meeting.

Matt Reynolds arrived at the meeting at 6:35 p.m.

 NEW BUSINESS SUMMER SCHOOL PROGRAMS 

Mrs. Aletta Lawrence advised that after analyzing expenditures through February, it has been determined that there is enough money to offer a summer school program again this year. The summer school program will be for 19-20 days. Motion by Nunnery, second by Greathouse, to approve a summer school program, as presented. Roll Call: Ayes – Nunnery, Lee, Greathouse, Zirkelbach, Reynolds, and Holt. Nays – None. Absent – Hollmann. Motion carried. 

RENEWAL WITH AUDITORS 

Motion by Zirkelbach, second by Nunnery, to renew a one year contract with Krehbiel and Associates, as presented. Roll Call: Ayes – Zirkelbach, Reynolds, Nunnery, Lee, Greathouse, and Holt. Nays – None. Absent – Hollmann. Motion carried. 

2016-2017 SCHOOL CALENDAR The preliminary 2016-2017 school calendar was discussed and tabled until the next Board meeting. 

RECIPROCAL AGREEMENT WITH ST. MARY’S SCHOOL Motion by Nunnery, second by Lee, to enter into a reciprocal agreement with St. Mary’s School to be able to use our facilities in case of an emergency, as presented. Roll Call: Ayes – Nunnery, Lee, Zirkelbach, Greathouse, Reynolds, and Holt. Nays – None. Absent – Hollmann. Motion carried. 

CLOSED SESSION Motion by Lee, second by Greathouse, to enter into closed session for the purposes of hearing information regarding appointment, employment, compensation, discipline, performance or dismissal of specific employees (5 ILCS 120/2©(1), collective negotiating matters between the public body and its employees or their representatives, or deliberations concerning salary schedules for one or more classes of employees. (5 ILCS 120/2©(2), security procedures and the use of personnel and equipment to respond to an actual, a threatened, or a reasonably potential danger to the safety of employees, students, staff, the public, or public property. 5 ILCS 120/2©(8)). Roll Call: Ayes – Lee, Reynolds, Nunnery, Greathouse, Zirkelbach, and Holt. Nays – None. Absent – Hollmann. Motion carried. The Board adjourned to closed session at 6:45 p.m. 

OPEN SESSION The Board of Education returned to open session at 8:20 p.m.

 PERSONNEL EMPLOYMENT LIST Motion by Lee, second by Zirkelbach, to employ the following personnel, subject to the condition that they authorize and successfully pass a fingerprint based criminal records check. CLASSIFIED Christina Robinson as 21st CCLC Afterschool Program Supper Counter at the Dr. Nick Osborne Primary Center. 

Shirley Bravard as Part-Time Early Childhood Individual Aide at Dr. Andy Hall Early Childhood Center. 

Roll Call: Ayes – Lee, Zirkelbach, Nunnery, Greathouse, Reynolds, and Holt. Nays – None. Absent – Hollmann. Motion carried. 

LEAVES Motion by Nunnery, second by Greathouse, to approved the maternity leave for Tosha Lusch starting around April 14th, 2016, and to extend the maternity leave of Haley Haarmann through the end of this school year. Roll Call: Ayes – Nunnery, Greathouse, Lee, Zirkelbach, Reynolds, and Holt. Nays – None. Absent – Hollmann. Motion carried. 

ADJOURNMENT Motion by Lee, second by Nunnery, to adjourn the meeting. Roll Call: Ayes – Lee, Greathouse, Reynolds, Nunnery, Zirkelbach, and Holt. Nays – None. Absent – Hollmann. Motion carried. The meeting adjourned at 8:23 p.m.
