Rep. Brandon Phelps is one of the latest targets of an advertising campaign blasting southern Illinois state legislators for being lackeys to House Speaker Mike Madigan.
Phelps, an incumbent Democrat who has been in office since 2003, is portrayed in the ad by the Illinois Republican Party as having more allegiance to Madigan, the Chicago-based Democratic Party chairman and Speaker of the House, than his own constituents in southeast Illinois.
For all but two years since 1983, Madigan has held the Speaker of the House position and many place the current economic crisis the state is in on squarely on him.
The content of the ad slamming Phelps for his continued allegiance to Madigan.
“In southern Illinois they say they are for us," a narrator intones. "Then they go to Springfield and do House Speaker Madigan's bidding. Phelps rubber-stamped Mike Madigan's phony budget, adding billions in new debt, higher taxes on working families. But for failed Chicago schools? A reckless bailout. Phelps...what he says means nothing. What he does says everything.”
Phelps has voted for Madigan as Speaker with the first vote of every legislative session since he has been in office.
Jason Kasiar, the Republican candidate, in House District 118 is running against Phelps this year.
