JALC raises bar for Southern Illinois fitness
From weight training and swimming to massage services, John A. Logan College (JALC) in Carterville offers a wide range of workout and health options for area residents, keeping the body fit along with the mind.
Brad Griffith, who serves as director of the college’s Community Health Education Complex, recently observed that the “state-of-the-art” facility allows students, staff and faculty to feel their best via the center’s workout offerings.
“I’m impressed by … how people have come in here and changed their lives, improved their health,” said Griffith, according to the college’s website. “They feel so much better about themselves.”
Two swimming pools (one Olympic-sized), training equipment and a massage clinic are housed under one roof. Personal trainer Derrick Snyder commented on the flexibility of the facility’s offerings — conducive to either light fitness training or rigorous marathon preparation.
“Some people just want to stay active, others want to build muscle or train,” Snyder stated via the JALC website. “It doesn’t matter what level of fitness you (want) to achieve, this place has everything you need. Some are senior citizens, some are middle-aged, some are college students. Nobody asks your age around here. We all have one goal, to get better fit.”
Operating as part of JALC’s continuing education department — with over 30 instructors, lifeguards and staff — the facility is located at 700 Logan College Road in Carterville. Through participation with the nationwide “Silversneakers” program, senior citizens may qualify for free membership, amenities and fitness classes.
