Southern Illinois' Jared Kern recently received the Missouri Valley Conference Men's Field Athlete of the Week honor for his effort at the Tennessee Relays.
The SIU athletic website reported that Kern had a throw of 64 feet, 5¾ inches at the Relays, which took place April 7-8 in Knoxville. Kern's throw not only was second in the event, but also put him in first place among all throws this season in the West Region. The throw also was the fourth-longest in all of the NCAA through April 8, second-best in SIU history and a personal best for Kern in outdoor competitions.
Kern, a native of Machesney Park, was an NCAA Indoor All-American earlier this year. His MVC honor was the third-straight the SIU men's track team has earned and 13th overall Athlete of the Week honor claimed by Saluki athletes this season.
