The Veterans Honor Flight of Southern Illinois wants to take veterans on an all-expenses-paid, one-day trip to Washington to visit memorials honoring their service.

It's asking for your help.

The Honor Flight program is a national initiative to enable veterans to visit memorials raised in their honor, and the Southern Illinois chapter serves those living in the area. This year, the group is working to raise funds to cover the costs of flying veterans this fall, as well as the costs of ground transportation and food and drink.

The group has run several fundraising events, including a raffle sponsored by Pepsi MidAmerica and Black Diamond Harley-Davidson in which one lucky entrant won a 2017 Harley Davidson Sportster 883.

“We want to take this opportunity to show our veterans that their dedication and sacrifice to their country did not go unnoticed,” Daniel Nalley, vice president of operations at Pepsi MidAmerica, said. "We can all provide this opportunity with Honor Flight of Southern Illinois.”

The 17th Street Bar & Grill, Marion VFW and Pass Heating and Cooling have also run fundraisers for the flight.

The Honor Flight is accepting donations from individuals and organizations, which can be sent to the group or made in person at any Peoples National Bank location. Those making donations of $500 or more are considered sponsors of the program.
