Southern Illinois University baseball fans should keep an eye on starting pitcher Chad Whitmer, who was drafted by the New York Yankees recently. Whitmer was taken in the 10th round of the 2017 MLB Draft and becomes the 41st Saluki to be grabbed in the first 10 rounds.

Whitmer wrapped up his SIU career with a 3.70 career ERA and 15 wins this season. He also led the Missouri Valley Conference with 95 strikeouts. According to SIU’s website, Whitmer was the team's No. 1 starting pitcher during the past two seasons.

A South Bend, Indiana, native, Whitmer was named to the All-MVC team twice and was also a two-time MVC pitcher of the week during his senior year. He finished his college career ranked fifth in school history for innings pitched, with 282, and eighth in strikeouts, with 224.
