David Friess, a candidate for the 116th District in the Illinois House, is holding a food drive to support two local food pantries in the district. He and his campaign are collecting nonperishable food items to support the Hope Food Pantry in Columbia and the Sparta Food Pantry.

The Republican hopeful is calling on community members to join his efforts to support these food pantries, which can be lifelines for community members in times of crisis.

“Everyone from small businesses, industry workers, to farmers are feeling the pain of the COVID-19 closures," he said. "I’m proud of the way our community has come together to support one another through this crisis. The heart and compassion of the people of Southern Illinois are on full display, and I’m happy our team can help support both Hope and Sparta Food Pantries.”

Canned goods and other nonperishable items are crucial to food pantries, which are assisting citizens affected by the COVID-19 crisis and the stay-at-home order issued by Gov. J.B. Pritzker, which is expected to remain in effect until the end of May.

In an April 29 post on his Facebook page, Friess shared a link to a Google document for individuals interested in donating to the Hope Food Pantry.  As part of this food drive, Friess’ campaign will pick up donations right off residents’ front porches.

Individuals are interested in making a donation should contact  Team Friess by email, at votefriess@gmail.com.

A combat veteran and attorney, Friess served in the military during Operation Desert Storm. His governmental service includes the Red Bud City Council, where he represents the city’s Third Ward. He and his wife Miki parents of two children.

The 116th District in southwestern Illinois, includes all or part of Cahokia, Chester, Columbia, Du Quoin, Marissa, Pinckneyville, Red Bud, Sparta and Waterloo.
