A new bill, HB4251, has been introduced to protect students and families from the effects of federal government shutdowns. The legislation aims to ensure that federally funded scholarships and tuition waivers awarded by public universities are not affected during periods when the federal government is not operating. This measure is designed to prevent students from being penalized due to budget disputes at the federal level.
“No student should have their education put at risk because of chaos in Washington,” according to a statement released about the bill.
David Friess, a Republican who was elected to the Illinois State House in 2023 representing the 115th House District, is behind this initiative. He replaced former state representative Nathan Reitz.
The proposed law seeks to provide stability for students relying on federal support for their education, regardless of political or budgetary disagreements occurring in Washington.
