State Representative David Friess has introduced House Bill 1232, a proposal aimed at repealing the Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) Card Act in Illinois. According to Rep. Friess, Illinois is among the few states that require this additional bureaucratic step for gun owners.

“Illinois remains one of the few states in the nation that imposes this extra layer of bureaucracy on responsible gun owners,” stated Rep. Friess. He argued that “the FOID card is redundant and unnecessary, as all legal gun purchases are already subject to federal background checks.” The proposed legislation seeks to allow citizens to exercise their Second Amendment rights without what he describes as government overreach.

The bill does not intend to alter existing federal background check requirements or regulations concerning concealed carry permits. “We must protect the constitutional rights of Illinois citizens,” Rep. Friess added. “Responsible gun owners have been under attack by the Illinois government, and it’s time to VOID the FOID!”

House Bill 1232 is currently being reviewed by the Illinois General Assembly. Rep. Friess represents the 115th District.
