Sparta Community Hospital has received the Stroke Ready Hospital designation from the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) for 2025. The designation confirms that the hospital is prepared around the clock to evaluate, stabilize, and treat patients experiencing stroke symptoms, as well as transfer them promptly if a higher level of care is required.

According to hospital representatives, being a Stroke Ready Hospital means having continuous access to CT scans for immediate diagnosis, staff trained in rapid identification and treatment of stroke symptoms, established protocols for administering clot-busting medications when appropriate, and strong working relationships with local EMS and regional stroke centers to ensure quick transfers when needed.

Paula Cunningham, Assistant Clinical Officer at Sparta Community Hospital, stated: “This recognition reflects the dedication and skill of our emergency department, imaging team, and all of the clinical staff who work together to provide lifesaving care. Stroke care is truly a team effort, and we are proud to offer this level of readiness right here in our community.”

The hospital emphasizes that recognizing stroke signs early can be critical. They encourage community members to remember the acronym BE FAST: Balance (sudden loss), Eyes (vision changes), Face (drooping), Arms (weakness or numbness), Speech (slurred or difficult speech), and Time (to call 911 immediately).

Hospital leadership says they will continue investing in staff training, medical equipment, and collaborative partnerships so patients have access to timely and effective stroke care locally.
