Paul Schimpf, candidate for State
Senate in Illinois 58th District, has
opened a campaign office in Monroe
County.
It’s at 742 N. Market in Waterloo,
next to the Rural King.
Schimpf, a retired U.S. Marine, is vying for the GOP nomination in a race to replace retiring State Sen. Dave Luechtefeld (R-Okawville). He was born at Scott Air Force Base, lives in Waterloo and was raised in Monroe County before attending the U.S. Naval Academy.
The 58th District includes parts of Washington, Jefferson, Perry, Randolph, Jackson, Union, Monroe and St. Clair Counties.
Luechtefeld has endorsed Schimpf.
“When you think of someone who’s going to replace you, you’d like
to have someone who is honest and
smart, and someone who is going to
work really hard, and I’m convinced
he is on track with that,” he told the
Southern Illinoisan upon Schimpf ’s
announcement last fall.
Sheila Simon, the former lieutenant governor and running mate of
former governor and Chicago Demo-
crat Pat Quinn, will be the Democrat
nominee for the 58th District seat in
November. If elected, she would ally
with the currently Chicago-centric
leadership in Springfield, including
House Speaker Michael Madigan and
Senate President John Cullerton.
Both are advocates for more state
borrowing, an income tax hike and
shifting more state funding to Chi-
cago. In her 2010 run for lieutenant
governor, Simon publicly called for
an income tax hike.
Schimpf is campaigning on a platform of streamlined government and lower taxes.
