Sam Meek, a freshman golfer for Southern Illinois University, was named the Missouri Valley Conference Golfer of the Week, SIU's website announced April 19.
Meek, who attended Crestwood Secondary School and is from Peterborough, Ontario, tied for 23rd place at the Boilermaker Invitational, which was held April 15-16 in West Lafayette, Indiana. Meek had the second-best round of all competitors on April 16's last round when he shot a career-best 67 and notched nine birdies. For the three-round tourney, he shot a 221, which was 5-over par.
Meek's efforts on the last day were key in the Salukis going up three spots in the team standings. According to MVC's website, SIU went from 36-over par to 31-over in the last round. SIU tied with Northern Illinois for ninth out of 15 teams with a team score of 895.
Kent State won the meet with a team score of 865.
