Sparta CUSD board members discuss STAR testing

The Sparta Community Unit School District #140 Board of Education met Oct. 13 to discuss STAR testing.

Here are the meeting's minutes, as provided by the board:

"School board members elected or appointed to their seat after June 13, 2011 complete within the first year of their term a minimum of four hours of professional development leadership training covering topics in education and labor law, financial oversight and accountability, and fiduciary responsibilities of a board member. School board meetings are the second Thursday of every month at 7 p.m."

BOARD HIGHLIGHTS

PERSONNEL

The Board approved Ryan McClellan as Athletic Director at Evansville Attendance Center.

Bob Huether and Ben Lake were approved as Volunteer Assistant Basketball Coaches at Evansville Attendance Center.

Rich Williams will be an Assistant Coach for Boys’ Basketball at Sparta High School.

Eric Bayless was approved as a volunteer Assistant Boys’ Basketball Coach at Sparta

High School.

Tarina Salger and Jennifer Rheinecker were approved as Yearbook Sponsors at Evansville Attendance Center.

MISCELLANEOUS

The following FBLA Overnight Trips were approved:

? November to Milwaukee, WI for the National Fall Leadership Conference;

? March to Springfield, IL for the State Leadership Conference; and

? June to Anaheim, CA for the National Leadership Conference

The Sparta High School Lifesavers Retreat to DuBois, IL in November was approved.

The Skills USA trip to Tinley Park, IL in November for the Fall Leadership Conference was also approved.

The Randolph County Teen Drinking Coalition will be held October 18 in the Sparta High School Cafeteria at 6 p.m. The program is to stop teenage drinking.

STAR testing was discussed. Students take the testing on computers. There will be three tests per year.

Truancy was discussed. Principals have been reaching out to parents to determine why students are missing school.

ROE will purchase glasses for students to observe the total eclipse on August 22.

The next regular board meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Thursday, November 10, 2016, at Sparta Lincoln School
