DePoister named Mt. Vernon police officer of the year

Detective Derek DePoister was presented with the Officer of the Year Award at the Jan. 19 Mt. Vernon City Council meeting.

Police Chief Chris Deichman said DePoister was chosen out of a pool of three finalists based on the quality of his skills and professionalism.

At the same meeting, the council waived the bid process for new fire equipment to directly purchase new emergency rescue tools from Municipal Emergency Supply Services Inc. for $17,400.

Council member Todd Piper announced the formation of a new neighborhood watch group for the north side of Mt. Vernon. Along these lines, Council member Donte Moore urged residents to work with police to help address a series of recent burglaries. Residents intersted in forming a watch group in their neighborhood were encouraged to contact Mt. Vernon police.
