Mt. Vernon OKs contract to demolish nine homes

The Mt. Vernon City Council awarded a $43,445 demolition contract to Heck's Engineering during a special meeting held recently at City Hall.

The contract covers the demolition of houses located at 1206 S. 12th St., 1208 S. 12th St., 1516 Perkins Ave., 1214 S. 26th St., 1105 S. 23rd St., 713 S. 21st St., 228 Opkyke Ave., 714 Salem Road and 1115 Herbert St.

The council also approved a rezoning ordinance for 11525 N. Illinois Hwy. 142 that will allow Continental Tire to build a $2.4 million, 21,000-square-foot manufacturing and storage facility on the site.

The site had been zoned for agriculture and will now be zoned for general industrial use.
