The City of Carbondale, Illinois Sustainability Commission will hear the current status report on the former Koppers wood treating site at its meeting Thursday, Feb. 18 at 6 p.m. in Room 103 of City Hall, 200 S. Illinois Ave.

Koppers Co. treated a variety of wood products, including railroad ties and utility poles, with creosote, Pentachlorophenol (PCP) and other chemicals from 1902 to 1991. Cleanup of the site commenced in 2003 and ended in 2006. Monitoring of the site and surrounding area will continue for at least 30 years.

The commission will also continue the discussion of porous concrete for sidewalks and driveways. By using water permeable techniques, water can be absorbed into the soil instead of running over solid concrete surfaces and into storm drains. This reduces the risk of flooding during sudden rain events. It also allows the soil to naturally filter the water as it moves from the surface to the ground water.

Discussions will also continue on the graduated trash fee and polystyrene foam. Under new business, the commission will hear and discuss a chicken farm, which is located near Cedar Lake.
