The Carbondale, Illinois Human Relations Commission officially expressed its support for the city's Charter of Compassion during a recent meeting at the Carbondale Civic Center.
The commission recommended the Carbondale City Council pass the Carbondale Compassionate City Resolution, which supports the charter.
Library Director Diane Brawley Sussman said residents and groups have been working for five years to develop a plan for Carbondale's version of the charter, which is based on an outline of steps developed by author and scholar Karen Armstrong.
Armstrong's organization, created in 2009, advocates for a global network of local responses to pressing issues based on compassion.
The commission also advanced to the city council a request from the Sparrow Coalition to grant a temporary exemption from special use permits for organizations willing to house homeless individuals as part of the city's emergency housing plan this winter.
