Ryan Gougis was recently awarded the spring 2016 Gene Callahan Internship at the Illinois State Capitol.
The Chicago resident received the award from the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute (PSPPI) at Southern Illinois University (SIU) in Carbondale.
“We are pleased to make this opportunity available to SIU students,” PSPPI Director David Yepsen said. “It is a fitting tribute to Gene’s legacy that we help eager and determined young people of any background explore and get a foothold into public service. The selection process was competitive and Ryan rose to the top.”
As a part of the internship program, selected students will have the opportunity to take an active part in the legislative process of Illinois. Gougis is going to work closely with the Illinois General Assembly members while they shape public policy and craft laws.
According to Yepsen, Gougis will acquire new skills and gain firsthand knowledge of the legislative and political processes. The experience and knowledge received during the General Assembly legislative session can be a great asset and lead to exciting career opportunities, he said.
Gougis is set to graduate with a bachelor of arts degree in criminology in May. During his time at SIU Carbondale, Gougis has been noted to be an ambitious and compassionate student and mentor.
The award is named in honor of the late Gene Callahan, a longtime aide to U.S. Sens. Paul Simon and Alan Dixon. Callahan also served as a member of the SIU Board of Trustees.
