Rip Stokes pictures now available at Carbondale Planning Services Office

Carbondale

Copies of the pictures from Rip Stokes, given to Southern Illinois University (SIU) Alumni Association, are now available in the Carbondale Planning Services Office.

The photos document the 1969 fire that destroyed the Main Building on the SIU Campus. Carbondale Preservation Commission member Dorothy Ittner talked about the photos during a commission meeting held in January. Ittner also announced that the Neighborhood Alliance meeting had been scheduled for Jan. 23.

Commission Chair John Parkinson discussed the Founder’s Day Celebration 2016 by requesting a plan for responsibilities and deadlines to ensure a successful event.

Councilman Lee Fronabarger said that he was finalizing the scripts for the speakers. He also decided on a slide presentation showing the current lots and the past lots. The presentation will also include pictures of founders and the marker at Woodlawn Cemetery.

Ittner talked about the individuals who had taken part in the Woodlawn event, which had people in period dress. She recommended talking to the SIU theater department for costumes and actors for the program.
