District 58 candidate Paul Schimpf
In the March 15 Illinois Senate Republican primary for District 58, Paul Schimpf won big over rival Sharee Langenstein. Of a total of 14,856 votes cast, Schimpf claimed approximately 10,509 votes -- an impressive 70.74 percent of the votes, while Langenstein received 4,347 votes (29.26 percent).
“I received a gracious phone call from my competitor, Sharee Langenstein, conceding the race,” Schimpf said in a statement. “I am proud to announce that we were victorious in today's Republican Primary. I am honored and humbled by the trust the voters have placed in me and I look forward to continuing on into the general election. Thank you to everyone that voted for me and the volunteers who worked hard on my campaign.”
In the Presidential Republican primary, Donald Trump led with 42.16 percent of the votes in Monroe County. On the Democratic side, 53.64 percent of Monroe County voters supported Bernie Sanders, while 43.40 percent voted for Hillary Clinton.
In the Congressional Republican race, Kyle McCarter lost to John Shimkus among Coles County voters. On the Democratic side incumbent Rep. Tammy Duckworth took the lead with 2,600 votes in Coles County over Andrea Zopp, who received 918 votes, and Napoleon Harris, who received 389 votes.
