The Carbondale, Illinois Preservation Commission is going to meet tonight at 7 to discuss nominations for the 2015 Historic Preservation Award.
In the meeting, there will also be discussions about the establishment of a nominating committee for the election of officers. There will be a presentation for possible bicycle racks near the Town Square Pavilion by Carbondale Main Street.
Everyone is eligible to nominate a property, which can be nominated in one of the four chosen categories. There categories are preservation, restoration, sympathetic addition and compatible new construction.
“Preservation” includes buildings that have been kept in their original architectural style and are being used for their original purpose. “Restoration” is for properties that have been restored to their original style or appearance.
“Sympathetic Addition” is about the construction of an addition to an existing structure that is consistent with the original architectural style of the structure. “Compatible New Construction” is about any new structure that is consistent with the original architectural style of the neighborhood or that utilizes historic building materials and techniques.
Even though anyone can nominate properties, owners are encouraged to nominate their own properties. The winners will be recognized in a City Council meeting in May.
