Carbondale debates police in schools

Handcuffs

The Carbondale, Illinois Human Relations Commission heard an update on the issue of police in schools during a recent meeting.

Cathy Field of the Racial Justice Coalition told the commission that the coalition voted against bringing police into local schools. The commission suggested finding a neutral third party to organize a forum to discuss the issue.

The commission also received criticism from Mayor Mike Henry regarding the commission's focus on the Carbondale Police Department. The mayor also noted the extreme lateness of the 2014 Annual Report, and indicated that reports could be submitted regardless of whether information was received from the Police Department.
