‘Senior Saints’ committee calls for entries

Jefferson County’s senior citizens are no slouches, so the Senior Saints Hall of Fame Committee is honoring their efforts by soliciting nomination forms in cooperation with the City of Mt. Vernon and Jefferson County’s Board.

Hall of Fame Committee chair Michaela Scattone announced that changes are underway to improve the program’s ability to acknowledge the dedication and skills contributed by the area’s elders. While the Chamber of Commerce elected to discontinue its support of the tradition this year, Scattone expressed confidence in the program’s future.

“As always, we are extremely thankful to Mt. Vernon and the Jefferson County Board for their continued support,” Scattone said. “I think it goes to show that our elected officials and local leaders are doing a fantastic job of honoring and encouraging those that give so much to our community.”

County residents are urged to submit nominations for potential “Senior Saint” candidates who are at least 65, Jefferson County residents and not currently a paid political office holder. Nominees should demonstrate community service, love of locality or nation, and the ability to embrace change.

Application forms are available at the City Clerk’s office at 1100 Main St., Mt. Vernon. The nomination deadline is Aug. 17; packets can be mailed to: Senior Saints Committee, P.O. Box 454, Mt. Vernon, IL 62864 or submitted via the County Board’s website at jeffersoncountyillinois.com. Questions may be addressed by calling 618-838-5888.

Finalists will be honored at a banquet on Nov. 4 at Cedarhurst Center for the Arts in Mt. Vernon.
