Morthland College's first varsity game in the history of the school's football program resulted in a win for the Patriots.
Morthland used a huge third-quarter surge to blow past Robert Morris University-Peoria 36-6 on Sept. 3, in Carbondale, MorthlandPatriots.com reported.
After a scoreless first half, the Patriots outscored the Eagles 22-6 in the third quarter, then added two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
Morthland quarterback Dennis Chester was 25-of-44 passing for 226 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Demontez Miller-Gray had 15 carries for 46 yards, a touchdown and six catches for 56 yards. DeAndre Allen had four catches for 58 yards and a touchdown. Norvell Alston had a six-yard touchdown reception.
Defensively for the Patriots, Spencer Cook had seven tackles including a sack. Jacobee Marshall recovered a fumble for a touchdown.
Morthland began its football program in 2015, going 1-4-1. Former athletic director Buddy Foster said the timeline is for the school to have its own football field by fall 2017.
Next up for Morthland is College of Faith at 2 p.m. Saturday at Johnson Field in West Frankfort.
