Miners' season ends with playoff loss

The Southern Illinois Miners ended their season by losing a best-of-five series with the River City Rascals 3-1.

The Miners lost the first game 4-3 on Sept. 6 and the second game 6-0 on Sept. 7, with both games in O'Fallon. The team won 7-2 on Sept. 9 but lost 3-2 on Sept. 10, with those two games in Marion.


Aaron Gates led Southern Illinois in the series with a .286 batting average and three runs scored. Alex De Leon had a team-high three RBIs.

The Miners ended the regular season as West Division champions with a 63-33 record, which was the best record in the league.

With the series win, River City moved on to play the Evansville Otters for the Frontier League title. Evansville beat the Joliet Slammers 3-1 in that series. Joliet had won the East Division with a 51-45 record.
