Children and adults with disabilities are being invited to attend summer camp on the shores of Little Grassy Lake this summer through Camp Little Giant, Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s therapeutic recreation camp.
The six- to 13-day adventures offer boat rides, swimming, music, horseback riding, arts and crafts, dances, campfires, talent shows, nature hikes and more. Nine sessions geared to different ages and abilities will be held at Touch of Nature Environmental Center, a 3,100-acre facility south of Carbondale on Giant City Road.
Costs range from $500 to $2,100, depending on the level of care and supervision needed and the length of the camp.
Camp Little Giant provides 24-hour supervision, including onsite nurses. The typical ratio is one staff member to no more than four campers; one-on-one assistance is available for those requiring extra support.
The first adult camp is scheduled for June 11-16 for those 21 and older with high-care needs or low mobility, and those using wheelchairs. The first youth camp is planned for July 16-21 for children ages 8-21 with physical, cognitive or developmental disabilities.
