The first Southern Illinois Veterans Honor Flight got its day in the sun in the shadow of some of the nation's most famous memorials during its visit to Washington.
Rep. Dave Severin (R-Benton) marked the occasion with the presentation of a General Assembly resolution honoring the group.
"Today I was proud to present the organizers of the inaugural Southern Illinois Veterans Honor Flight with a resolution from the General Assembly naming April 25, 2017 as Veterans Honor Flight Day in the State of Illinois,” Severin wrote on his Facebook page. “Each of the 57 veterans who flew to DC will receive a certificate as well!"
The Honor Flight Network is a non-profit organization that works with chapters throughout the country to ensure that local veterans can travel to the nation’s capital and visit the memorials that have been erected in their honor.
Last month marked the first trip undertaken by the Southern Illinois Veterans Honor Flight. The group covered all expenses for the veterans on the one-day trip, including their flights, transportation and meals. Intensive fundraising and sponsorship from communities throughout Southern Illinois helped defray the costs.
