Several bills in the “grand bargain” package have gotten their day in the Senate recently, but one that Sen. Paul Schimpf (R-Waterloo) didn't want to hear any more about was Senate Bill 6, according to a press release from his office.
SB6 outlines a spending plan for fiscal year of 2017 and 2018 that includes increased spending, which Schimpf said he refuses to back considering Illinois' difficulty paying the bills it has already accrued.
“I have been an outspoken proponent of ensuring that we get revenues out the door for K-12 education funding, Southern Illinois University, and our cash-strapped communities who are owned by the state of Illinois," he said. "Unfortunately, the appropriation was a bad deal for many of my constituents.”
Schimpf also said the appropriation package would likely require a huge tax boost as well as “unconstitutional pension provisions.” He said would also mean less funding for local governments and transportation.
