The price of local government: City of Columbia

The City of Columbia budget was $14.83 million for its 2015 fiscal year, or $139,901.54 per household.

That's a decrease of 2.3 percent from 2014, when the city spent $15.19 million, or $143,262.95 per household.

Columbia has 106 households and a population of 9,707.

Since 2001, the City of Columbia budget has fallen by 7.9 percent, from $16.10 million. The city population has grown 22.5 percent over the same period, from 7,922.

Salaries accounted for 24.5 percent of city spending in 2015. Columbia property taxpayers paid $3.64 million for 55 full-time employees and 45 part-time employees.
