Analysis: Sales tax funded 17 percent of City of Mt. Vernon budget in 2016

The City of Mt. Vernon's local sales tax brought in $5,415,795 in 2016, according to Illinois state comptroller revenue data. Mt. Vernon, population 15,277, relied on its local sales tax to contribute 17 percent of total revenue that year.

Mt. Vernon in Jefferson County levies a 1.5 percent sales tax. 

Southwest Illinois News analyzed the sales tax collections in the Jefferson County municipality and found it generated a total of $5,415,795 in tax revenue in 2016. That was the equivalent of 17 percent spent by local government.
