Herrin High School's football team is nothing if not consistent.
The Tigers are defending champions in the Southern Illinois River to River-Ohio Conference after finishing 5-0 last season. They also tied for the title in 2015 and won it in 2014 and 2013. Over the past several seasons, HHS has amassed a record of 61-10 in conference play.
The Tigers will be led by 11th-year head coach Jason Karnes, who has been largely responsible for the recent success of the team. Since Karnes took over in 2006, he has coached the team to nine winning seasons and an overall record of 83-33.The Tigers have suffered only one losing season under Karnes.
Herrin boasted a 9-2 overall record last year that saw some impressive wins. The Tigers put up 40 points or more on five occasions, including a 49-40 defeat of Murphysboro High School.
The Tigers open their season on Aug. 25 against Waterloo High School. Tough games this year promise to be against DuQuoin and Carterville high schools.
