The Frankfort Community High School Redbirds came close to winning the Southern Illinois River to River-Ohio Conference last season.

Close isn't good enough this year, as the Redbirds will be looking to improve on their 3-2 conference record and claim the title.

Frankfort scored wins against conference foes Murphysboro and Harrisburg on their way to the second-place finish. One of the Redbirds' big goals this year is to tighten a defense that gave up an average of 21 points per game last season.

The Redbirds open the season against Anna-Jonesboro High School, who won last year's matchup 12-6. They play their first home game on Sept. 1 against Pinckneyville. Their first conference game is on Sept. 15 against Harrisburg High School.

Frankfort's big challenge comes on Oct. 6, when it faces conference champion Herrin High School, which whipped the Redbirds last year 44-15.
