Cairo Unified School District 1 Board met September 19.

Here is the minutes provided by the Board:

Board President, Sheila Nelson, called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m.

Roll Call:

Members Present: Coleman, Stubblefield, Nelson, Harris, Gooden, Moore

Members Absent: Burris

(Moore arrived at 6:06 p.m.)

Example of Excellence:

Dr. Lisa Thomas, Cairo Jr. Sr. High school principal address the board concerning the video not shown at the last board meeting due to technical issues. This time the video played but no sound. Dr. Evers attempted to help then realized a part was missing from the Apple product and suggested that the video could be air dropped to her and she will e-mail it to all the Board Members.

This month’s Example of Excellence was from Mrs. Regina Brown, Dean of students at Cairo Elementary. She was gave an update on the students at Cairo Elementary starting off in the right direction. She stated that the kindergarteners were working on sight word and they can now recognize fifteen sight words. She also encouraged all Board Members to come visit the Cairo Elementary to see their Data Room/Wall. Mrs. Brown stated that they were working on another wall celebrating elementary students called Beginning Cool Tool-Expectation of the school where students go over the rules for the bathroom, classroom and the busses. For the month of August, Mrs. Brown said the elementary school had the only one write up for bullying. Cairo Elementary also had many things going on during August. Pre-K to transition to full days, and they also celebrated Grandparents Day. For Open House they had sixty seven parents came out. This was the same day Mrs. Ladonna lost her brother, Mr. Cletus Johnson, retired custodian of Cairo Elementary. Mrs. Brown said the Elementary School was working on their mission statement and will present to the Board their Mission and Vision Statements in the month of February.

Mrs. Brown thanked Mrs. Oshea, Ms. Harrell and Mrs. Coleman for the float, which won 2" piace in the Blues Festival Parade. Ms. Carlton did a Balloon Launch in honor of Mr. Cletus Johnson. Mrs. Brown stated that two students from last year had perfect attendance. Cairo Eleinentary is working on is the Sickle Cell Anemia Awareness, with Mrs. Coleman being in charge. Their goal for this year is to raise $700.00.

Ms. O’Shea comment about how Mrs. Brown goes into the classroom and substitute when they are short on sub teachers. She said, “It doesn't matter if it's Pre-k or 5" grade she doesn't hesitate to go to the class.

Board Member Vernon Stubblefield asked if they (Board Members) could get emails so they can know what's going on in both Cairo Elementary and Cairo Jr/Sr High Buildings.

Report of Superintendent

Superintendent Dr. Evers discussed the developers plan for the redevelopment of housing. asked the Board Members to look at their attendance sheet we have 388 students in the district. Last year we had 435 students. Keron Jackson representing the State of Illinois as the Beta National Ambassador, Our Annual Financial Audit was completed last week. We have achieved Financial Recognition for the 6" year straight. We had no findings reported this audit.

Before Superintendent Evers can discuss the information on the informational Board Member Rodney Moore stated that #5 should be on here for information. Superintendent Evers, stated that discussion of the hiring process for the Head Basketball Coach will be in closed session.

Superintendent Evers related to the board that “The Hastings Charitable Foundation has suspended monies to the district,' Board Member Rodney Moore said, “Beside the letter what was said about this letter for Hastings Charitable Foundation to stop funds.” Ms. O'Shea stated that Ryan O'Shea wrote so many letters to Mr. Holland, stating that some students would not experience the places or have the items if it wasn't for the Hastings Foundation. Board Member Rodney Moore asked who was on the board for Hastings. Ms. O'Shea said she didn't know who was on the board now but some of the people she did know that was on the board is not living.

Superintendent Evers stated these dates to remember:

October 10th Shawnee Division Meeting at Dongola (a) 6 p.m.

October 11th Superintendent Goals setting (a)5:30 p.m.

October 11th Special Board Meeting (a)6:00 pm concerning hiring of athletics

October 19th Regular Board Meeting (a 6:00pm
