City of Waterloo Downtown Beautification Committee met Sept. 14.

Here is the minutes provided by the Committee:

Present: Aldermen, Jim Hopkins, Stan Darter, Steve Notheisen and Jim Trantham, Building Inspector/Code Administrator Nathan Krebel, Financial Director Shawn Kennedy, Mayor Tom Smith, City Attorney Dan Hayes, Savannah Day, Nathan Hirsch and Willis Fischer.

1. Petitions by Citizens on Non-Agenda Items

None

2. Façade

a. Savannahs Southern Charm, 210 S. Main St. façade grant application was discussed with Savannah Day. She will get further dollar estimates and get back with the committee.

b. Nathan Hirsch Office Bldg., 219 W. Mill St. façade grant application was discussed with Nathan. It was decided to allow Nathan to move forward with the requested improvements, including the ADA concrete ramp and to approve the full application at a later date. Motion to approve application by Steve Notheisen and seconded by Stan Darter with Ayes from committee.

c. Willis Fischer Commercial Bldg., 116 S. Moore St. façade grant application was discussed with Willis. He plans on installing a new handrail on the concrete ramp/sidewalk in front of his business due to a drop off to the road from said ramp/sidewalk. Motion by Jim Hopkins to approve application and seconded by Steve Notheisen with Ayes from the committee.

3. Comments

There was general discussion among the committee members, mayor and city attorney on the definition and meaning of the façade grants. (Front entrance only, what about rear areas that act as an entrance?) Steve Notheisen stated, “we’ve made some inconsistent decisions in the past. I think we need to look at arising issues with the façade grants such as ADA and other concerns”.

Motion made by Stan Darter and seconded by Steve Notheisen to adjourn the meeting at 4:38 p.m. Motion passed unanimously.
