Columbia Community Unit School District No. 4 Board of Education met April 9.

Here is the minutes provided by the Board:

I.Call to Order And Roll Call

President Brad Roessler called the special meeting Call to order at 7:00 p.m. in the District Board Room.

II. Welcome/Recognition Of Visitors

President Roessler welcomed the public.

III. Public Comments/ Correspondence

The following comments were made by members of the community:

Rhonda Ries – Had concerns with parent notification five days after incident at Columbia High School. Requested more transparency from the District and inquired about police officers on campus.

Kelly Yochum – Inquired on actions being taken at high school for student safety; reflected on previous situations in other schools based on prior knowledge; commented on other incidents were threats were made; asked for mental help for the student and/or the student be prosecuted.

A parent questioned whether substitute teachers were trained in school safety measures and if the district planned on having a resource officer or police officer on campus.

A parent asked what next steps were, i.e. when would the public be notified of the results of this meeting. President Roessler responded that the results would be announced after Executive Session is concluded and the meeting returns to Open Session.

IV. Executive Session 7:22 p.m.

It was moved by Greg O’Connor, seconded by Scott Middelkamp to enter Executive Session for the purpose of Student Disciplinary Item (5 ILCS 120/2(c)(7)).

On a roll call vote:

Anderson-Aye, Hines-Aye, Long-Aye, Middelkamp-Aye, O’Connor-Aye, Roessler- Aye, Simmonds-Absent.

The motion carried, 6-Aye, 1-Absent, 0-Nay

Open Meeting Reconvened – 8:13 p.m.: President Roessler reconvened the meeting to Open Session at 8:13 p.m.

V. Action as a Result Of Executive Session

Motion to Expel Student A-1-2017-2018: Motion was made by Scott Middelkamp, seconded by Karen Anderson to expel Student A-1-2017-2018 for two years from April 11, 2018, to April 11, 2020 and

the Board’s determination that the student engaged in egregious conduct, that the student’s continued presence at school poses a threat to school safety of other students and staff and substantially disrupts the operation of the school. The Board further finds that given the severity of the student’s misconduct, there are no other appropriate disciplinary interventions available and that the presence of the student at school will foster a culture that the student’s behavior at school is acceptable or tolerated. The student shall be eligible to apply for enrollment at and successfully attend alternative school.

On a roll call vote:

Hines-Aye, Long-Aye, Middelkamp-Aye, O’Connor-Aye, Roessler-Aye, Simmonds- Absent, Anderson-Aye.

The motion carried, 6-Aye, 1-Absent, 0-Nay

V. Adjourn 8:14 p.m. - With no further business to come before the Board, it was moved by Greg O’Connor, seconded by Tammy Hines, to adjourn the meeting.

Upon a voice vote, Motion Carried 6-Aye, 1-Absent, 0-Nay

President Roessler adjourned the meeting at 8:14 p.m.
