How much has Sparta CUSD 140 overspent over the past 10 years?

Sparta Community Unit School District 140 accumulated $11.98 million in debt between fiscal years 2008 and 2017, according to a SW Illinois News analysis of public schools data.

Spending and revenue data obtained for this analysis comes from the Illinois Local Education Agency Retrieval Network (ILEARN), which is part of the Illinois State Board of Education and collects data annually on school district financials.

Over the 10-year span, Sparta CUSD 140 reported 2.9 percent less revenue. At the same time, total spending went up 25 percent. The resulting deficit grew by 1,347.5 percent from 2008 to 2017.
