Steeleville Community Unit School District 138 Board met May 21.

Here is the minutes provided by the Board:

Others Present: Stephanie Mulholland, Jennifer Haertling, Becky Krause, Carol Mayer, Mardell Granger and Kylie Mueller.

1. Rick Smith moved to approve the following consent agenda items as presented by

Superintendent, Stephanie Mulholland. Tim Mitchell seconded the motion.

A. Approve Board Minutes

B. Approve Board Minutes of Special Meeting Held April 30, 2018

C. Approve Board Minutes of Special Meeting Held May 7, 2018

D. Approve Itemized Bill for Current Month

E. Approve Estimated Payroll

F. Approve Registered Agent of Record for the Education Foundation

G. Approve Extension of Contract for Agriculture 360 Grant

A Roll Call vote was taken: Smith – Aye; Mitchell – Aye; Ernsting – Absent; Frederking – Aye; Mevert – Aye; Lowry-Rohlfing – Absent; Bockhorn – Aye. Motion Carried: 5 – Aye, 0 – Nay, 2 – Absent

2. No Visitors

3. Becky Krause, High School Art Teacher, gave a curriculum report. She also spoke about how a full time art teacher would be beneficial to the district.

4. Fred Frederking moved to approve the employment of Rachael Phelps as High School English Teacher. Tim Mitchell seconded the motion.

A Roll Call vote was taken: Frederking-Aye; Mitchell – Aye; Ernsting – Absent; Mevert – Aye; Lowry-Rohlfing – Absent; Smith – Aye; Bockhorn – Aye. Motion Carried: 5 – Aye, 0- Nay, 2 – Absent

5. Jim Mevert moved to approve the employment of Gage Lodge as Elementary Physical Education Teacher. Rick Smith seconded the motion. A Roll Call vote was taken: Mevert – Aye; Smith – Aye; Ernsting – Absent; Frederking – Aye; Mitchell – Aye; Lowry-Rohlfing – Absent; Bockhorn – Aye.

Motion Carried: 5 – Aye, 0 – Nay, 2 – Absent

6. Rick Smith moved to accept the resignation of High School Golf Coach, Darryl Winkelman. Jim Mevert seconded the motion.

A Roll Call vote was taken: Smith – Aye; Mevert – Aye; Ernsting – Absent; Frederking – aye; Mitchell – Aye; Lowry-Rohlfing – Absent; Bockhorn – Aye.

Motion Carried: 5 – Aye, 0 – Nay, 2 Absent

7. Board members debated about uniform colors. Aaron Fiene approached Mrs. Haertling about purchasing (through private donations) a black uniform for the boy’s basketball team. The uniform would be worn during tournaments or other special games. Tim Mitchell moved to allow the boys basketball team to purchase a black uniform. No board member seconded the motion and the motion failed.

Rick Smith moved to change the date of the September meeting to allow the FY19 budget to be on display for 30 days. The new date will be September 24, 2018. Fred Frederking seconded the motion.

A voice vote was taken: 5 – Aye, 0 – Nay, 2 - Absent

8. Carol Mayer, 2nd grade teacher, and Mardell Granger, Speech Pathologist, gave curriculum and program reports.

9. Informational Items on the Agenda

A. Budget Summary, Cash Fund Balances, Activity Fund Balances

B. Assistant Superintendent’s Report

1. High School Graduation was held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 20, 2018. There were 47 seniors that graduated and two seniors that did not graduate. Arrangements have been made for them to take credit recovery programs this summer.

2. Baccalaureate was held at the Baptist Church on Saturday, May 19, 2018, at 4:00 p.m.

3. Semester exams for grades 9-11 will take place on May 21st, 22nd and 23rd

.4. Becky Krause has expressed interest to Mrs. Haertling about becoming a full time art teacher in Steeleville.

5. Mrs. Haertling has advertised for a part-time foreign language teacher for most of the school year and has received no application. She will report in August for a possible teacher the following year.

6. Mrs. Haertling spoke about the upcoming summer Science Club trip to New York/Niagara Falls.

7. Mrs. Haertling reported that the greenhouse foundation was started on Tuesday, May 15th

.8. The high school baseball team competed in the Regional Championship on Saturday, May 19th. They won the game and are Regional Champions. The high school softball team also played in the Regional Championship on Saturday, May 19th. The softball team lost the game.

9. The boys track team went to the Sectional Track Meet on Wednesday, May 16th in Chester. No members from Steeleville advanced to the next level. 

10. The high school awards night was held on Monday, May 21st at 7:00 p.m. in the high school cafeteria.

C. SEA Negotiations – Dr. Mulholland received a letter from the SEA about negotiations. She hopes to meet in July and reach an agreement.

D. Dr. Mulholland reported that the district did not receive the $40,000 art grant. She asked for direction from the board about pursing a full-time art teacher for the 2018-2019 school year.

10. Rick Smith moved to adjourn the meeting at 7:52 p.m. Jim Mevert seconded the motion.
