Smithton State House candidate Jerry Costello II received another $50,530 from Illinois House Speaker and Democrat Party Chief Michael Madigan (D-Chicago) between Aug. 15 and Sept. 6, state filings show.

The Madigan funding was disclosed in reports filed with the Illinois State Board of Elections (ISBE) by Friends of Jerry Costello II, the campaign committee that supports Costello’s race against Republican David Friess in the 116th district.

The district covers all or part of Cahokia, Columbia, Valmeyer, Waterloo, Paderborn, Hecker, New Athens, Lenzburg, Marissa, Red Bud, Maeystown, Fults, Ruma, Evansville, Baldwin, Sparta, Ellis Grove, Steeleville, Cutler, Du Quoin, Chester and Rockwood.

Madigan’s contributions to Costello came from the campaign funds he controls, including his own committee, Friends of Michael J. Madigan, the Illinois Democratic Party and the Democratic County Chairman’s Association of Illinois. In all, Madigan has contributed $255,262 to the candidate’s campaign.

From Aug. 15 to Sept. 6, Madigan spent $2.67 million backing campaigns for 31 candidates. He's spent more than $100,000 on 12 candidates and more than $40,000 on 18.
