State House candidate David Friess took issue last recently with his opponent’s response to a candidate questionnaire from the Belleville News-Democrat.
According to Friess’ post on Facebook, Jerry Costello II (D-Red Bud) hedged a bit in his response about who he would back as House speaker next term, saying he would wait until the candidates emerge.
“Honestly, does Jerry think voters are stupid?” Friess wrote Oct. 4 on Facebook. “I’ll help Jerry out – the Speaker’s race will be between (Speaker) Mike Madigan and House Minority Leader Jim Durkin.”

Costello’s full answer to the Speaker question was attached to the social media post. In it, Costello said he would vote for the candidate who “puts me in a position to best represent my district” on three key issues: middle-class tax relief, more jobs and workers’ rights.
“Jerry, as he has the last three times, will be voting to elect the liberal tax-raising, budget-busting, pro-abortion, pro-amnesty, gun-confiscating Madigan,” Friess said. “I’ll vote for the other guy.”
Friess and Costello will compete for the 116th District seat Nov. 6, covering the communities of Chester, Columbia, Du Quoin, Pinckneyville, Red Bud, Sparta and Waterloo.
