The price of local government in 2016: Monroe County

The Monroe County budget was $106.23 million for its 2016 fiscal year.

That's an increase of 8.8 percent from 2015, when the county spent $97.62 million.

Monroe County has a population of 33,493.

Since 2001, the Monroe County budget has grown by 351.1 percent, from $23.55 million. The county population has grown 21.3 percent over the same period, from 27,619.

Salaries accounted for 11 percent of county spending in 2016. Monroe County property taxpayers paid $11.65 million for 191 full-time employees and 112 part-time employees.

In 2001, the county had 133 full-time employees and 201 part-time employees, and spent $9.37 million.
