State Rep. Terri Bryant (R-Murphysboro) called a new Illinois corrections policy put into place by the governor reckless.

Under the policy recently announced by Gov. J.B. Pritzker's administration, the Department of Corrections will no longer alert ICE when convicts who may be in the U.S. illegally are released.

“The most disturbing part of this new reckless policy is that we cannot tell what is going to happen when someone that is supposed to be deported is released from prison into the community where they were incarcerated,” Bryant said in a statement on her website. “That means, a rapist, murderer, or child molester that was supposed to be deported upon their release from prison are able to walk free in our communities.”

Bryant said the governor decided that he knows best and will determine whether federal immigration law applies in Illinois.

“It shouldn’t take an inmate being released and re-offending before the governor changes this policy,” she said.

The new policy has also been condemned by Republicans in the House and Senate, as well as local law enforcement members.
