The state Senate has approved legislation that would allow teachers who transitioned from teaching in a private school to a public school to purchase back their pension time.
Until Senate Bill 3027, teachers who made this move from privately to publicly funded education institutions lost the accumulation of years of private teaching toward their pension benefits. Educators now have the option to pay into the system, and cover both the employer and employee contributions to pension for the years of private teaching that would have been lost.
Supporters of this bill believe that it will help public schools who are struggling to recruit new teachers. SB 3027 would offer an incentive to private school teachers to make the transition to public schooling, and reduce the educator shortage with minimal financial impact on taxpayers.
Since SB 3027 passed by a unanimous 55-0 vote. The bill will now move to the House of Representatives for consideration.
