City of Du Quoin City Council met March 9.

Here is the minutes provided by the council:

The Minutes of the City Council of the City of Du Quoin, County of Perry, held on this 9th day of March in the year 2020, said meeting held in the Council Chambers of the Du Quoin City Hall. Invocation:

Reverend Bill Wiggs of Sunfield Methodist Church gave the invocation. Aaron Atkins led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Call to Order:

Mayor Alongi called the meeting to order at 6 p.m. with the following individuals present:

Commissioners Jill Kirkpatrick, Charles Genesio, and Michael Ward. City staff included City Attorney Aaron Atkins and City Clerk Ruth Hale.

The Council approved the open session Council minutes of the February 24th meeting.

Treasurer’s Report:

Commissioner Jill Kirkpatrick presented the Treasurer’s Report for the month ending February 29, 2020. She reported the following:

• Governmental Funds had month ending negative earnings of $117,930

• Water/Sewer Funds had a surplus of $21,765

• Total Cash was up from January 2019.

The Council approved the Treasurer’s Report.

Commissioners’ Comments:

The City Clerk gave a brief synopsis of information provided to her by a representative of the US Census Bureau. The Census will be delivered to residents March 9 -14, 2020. The Du Quoin Library staff can provide assistance with completing the Census to anyone that may want it.

The Mayor expressed his opposition to the ½ cent safety tax proposed by the county that will appear on the ballot next week. He provided a breakdown of the current taxes imposed on the businesses and citizens of Du Quoin. He also reminded everyone that one does not have to declare party affiliation to vote in the primary. By requesting a non-partisan ballot, one can vote on the tax proposition only, no party affiliated candidates will appear on the ballot.
