City of Columbia Public Library Board met March 18.

Due to the Corona Virus pandemic, the Library Board and City of Columbia officials met to discuss the best practice for serving the community while ensuring the safety of patrons and staff. Those in attendance included Board members Dan Brutton, Rodney Schreckenberg, Annette Bland, Kathleen Habermehl, Chris Trowbridge, Diane Stechmesser and City of Columbia officials Kevin Hutchinson, James Mitchel, Joe Caldwell, Terry Bruckert.
The meeting was called to order by President Dan Brutton at 7:00. Library Director Annette Bland presented options for the library’s operation. These ranged from complete closure to continuation of normal operation with extra precautions in place. A discussion was held to voice concerns for the needs of community and staff. After much thoughtful consideration a motion was made.
Motion
1. Close physical library building to patrons. 2. Make library materials available for checkout to patrons with curbside pickup. 3. Staff would man phones for those seeking internet information/references. 4. Regular library hours would be maintained at this time. 5. No books or other materials would be returned until further notice. No fines would be incurred.
Rodney Schreckenberg made motion; Diane Stechmesser seconded. Motion passed.
Motion
This change in library procedure would commence Friday March 20, 2020 and continue until Tuesday April 7, 2020. At this time the Board will reassess the situation and decide future course.
Diane Stechmesser made motion; Chris Trowbridge seconded. Motion passed.
James Mitchel informed the Board that Governor Pritzker has suspended the need for physical presence at public meetings with the option for virtual meetings. The public can view and participate in these meetings through the city website.
Rodney Schreckenberg made motion to adjourn meeting; Diane Stechmesser seconded. Meeting adjourned at 7:45.
