City of Du Quoin City Council Met April 26.

Here is the minutes provided by the council:

The Minutes of the City Council of the City of Du Quoin, County of Perry meeting was held in the Council Chambers of the Du Quoin City Hall.

Invocation:

City Attorney Aaron Atkins gave the invocation and Mayor Alongi led the Pledge of Allegiance. Call to Order:

Mayor Alongi called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. with the following individuals attending: Commissioners Jill Kirkpatrick, Michael Ward, and Bob Karnes. City staff present included City Attorney Aaron Atkins and City Clerk Ruth. Absent was Commissioner Charles Genesio.

Approval of Minutes:

The Council approved the Open Session Council minutes of the April 12th meeting.

The Council approved and held confidential the Executive Session Council minutes of the April 12th meeting.

Approval of Bills to be Paid:

The Council approved payment of the bill list and payroll report.

13.) Other Business:

The Medicine Shoppe was demolished today. The owners had structural engineers inspect the building and it was determined that a repair would be too costly. There was a TIF agreement for $500 assistance for the demolition and in return the owners would donate the property to the Du Quoin Community Development Corporation.

Commissioners’ Comments:

Ward: Asked for support for local businesses. The City lost a shoe store and it was sad to lose businesses in town. There are three new eating establishments and asked for support. Congratulated Chris Robinson on becoming a grandfather. Asked the council and community to think about the prayer that starts every meeting and hopes that we all conduct ourselves according to that prayer.

Karnes: Was inspired by Tyler Perry’s remarks at the Academy Awards to get along. Said we should all practice more love on all walks of life. Quit hating and try to get along. We can work on it even now.

Mayor: Announced that he would attend the next council meeting via Webex. Also mentioned that Aaron would be excused as well. Commissioner Kirkpatrick will run the meeting. It will be legal according to Illinois OMA guidelines.

Public Comment:

Mayor Alongi announced that meeting was open for public comment at 6:25 p.m. Public comment was closed at 6:31 p.m.

Joyce Poole addressed the council on a condemnation and violations brought on behalf of the City against her. Aaron Atkins recommended to the council not to make any comments due to pending litigation.

The City Council adjourned at 6:31 pm.
