Sparta Community Unit School District #140 Board of Education met Nov. 10.

Here are the minutes provided by the board:

The regular meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by President Corey Rheinecker and upon the roll being called, Corey Rheinecker and the following members of the Board of Education answered present: Mekalia Cooper, Angela Craig, Howard Gallois and Kevin Holliday. Absent: Ron Heinen and Jennifer Morgan. Others present were: Superintendent Dr. Gabrielle Schwemmer; Recording Secretary Tina Witherby; Principals Scott Beckley, Charity Eugea and Chris Miesner; and members of the staff and community.

President Corey Rheinecker led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Gail McElroy requested a policy be made to permit drag queens from reading to students.

With no other public comment requests, the meeting continued.

Angela Craig moved, Kevin Holliday seconded to approve the minutes of the October 13, 2022, regular meeting and of the October 19, 2022, special meeting as presented. Roll call vote. Yeas: Craig, Holliday, Gallois, Cooper and Rheinecker. Nays: none. Motion carried.

Angela Craig moved, Howard Gallois seconded to approve the Bills, Payroll, Cash Flow and Fund Balances as presented. Roll call vote. Yeas: Craig, Gallois, Holliday, Cooper and Rheinecker. Nays: none. Motion carried.

The next regular board meeting is scheduled for December 8, 2022, at Evansville Attendance Center at 7 p.m.

Sparta High School Principal Scott Beckley recently met with One Goal again. They have decided that for the second semester, they will bring back an academic lab class for seniors. The graduation rates are a big topic. For next year, they will incorporate more lab classes.

Dr. Charity Eugea reported that Evansville Attendance Center has a Caring Closet with food and snacks for kids to take home with them for weekends. They were able to have their Veterans’ Day program in person.

Mr. Miesner reported that the Sparta Lincoln School was also able to bring back their Veterans’ Day program. He thanked the teachers and students for their help. There was also a Pre-K Family Literacy Event held at Sparta Lincoln School.

Dr. Schwemmer presented the September Superintendent Shout-Outs to Eian Wallace for Sparta Lincoln School. Navaeh Turner from Evansville Attendance Center and Brayden Henry from Sparta High School were not in attendance.

Dr. Schwemmer reported that the summative designations came out, along with the survey results from the Resilience of Southern Illinois. Data statistics will be promoted at each building.

Howard Gallois moved, Kevin Holliday seconded to approve the resolution stating the aggregate amount of taxes estimated to be levied for the year 2022 is $4,574,631, not including the Bond and Interest Levy of $912,370 and that the aggregate amount of taxes estimated to be levied for the year 2022 does not exceed 105% of the taxes extended in the year 2021. Roll call vote. Yeas: Gallois, Holliday, Cooper, Craig and Rheinecker. Nays: none. Motion carried.

Angela Craig moved, Howard Gallois seconded to approve the purchase of a mini-bus from Southern Bus & Mobility in the amount of $68,856. Roll call vote. Yeas: Craig, Gallois, Holliday, Cooper and Rheinecker. Nays: none. Motion carried.

Angela Craig moved, Howard Gallois seconded to approve the overnight trip for the Sparta High School Lifesavers on December 1-4, 2022. Roll call vote. Yeas: Craig, Gallois, Holliday, Cooper and Rheinecker. Nays: none. Motion carried.

Kevin Holliday moved, Howard Gallois seconded to go out for bid for the Evansville Attendance Center playground. Roll call vote. Yeas: Holliday, Gallois, Cooper, Craig and Rheinecker. Nays: none. Motion carried.

Jennifer Morgan moved, Angela Craig seconded to approve the Memorandum of Agreement with the Sparta Service Employees. Roll call vote. Yeas: Morgan, Craig, Cooper, Gallois and Rheinecker. Nays: none. Motion carried.

Jennifer Morgan moved, Angela Craig seconded to approve increasing officials’ pay as proposed. Roll call vote. Yeas: Morgan, Craig, Cooper, Gallois and Rheinecker. Nays: none. Motion carried.

Jennifer Morgan moved, Ron Heinen seconded to accept the resignation of Shanell Roberts as a 6-hour cook at Sparta Lincoln School effective November 14, 2022. Roll call vote. Yeas: Morgan, Cooper, Craig, Gallois and Rheinecker. Nays: none. Motion carried.

Howard Gallois moved, Mekalia Cooper seconded to approve Lathan Briscoe as an Assistant Boys’ Basketball Coach at Sparta High School for the 2022-2023 school year, subject to and contingent upon successful completion of a criminal history background check. Roll call vote. Yeas: Morgan, Craig, Cooper, Gallois and Rheinecker. Nays: none. Motion carried.

Angela Craig moved, Jennifer Morgan seconded to adjourn the meeting at 8:33 p.m. Roll call vote: Yeas: Craig, Morgan, Gallois, Cooper and Rheinecker. Nays: none. Motion carried.
