Pulling the Sheets Off: The 1920s Ku Klux Klan in Deep Southern Illinois
Saturday, February 25 at 11AM
The second wave of the Ku Klux Klan emerged in 1915 and made its way into southern Illinois in the 1920s. The first meetings in Alexander and Pulaski counties were held in 1923, and over time grew to approximately 1,000 dues-paying members. Local historian Darrel Dexter will talk about a forgotten aspect of regional history, the Second Ku Klux Klan in southern Illinois. Learn the history of how the Klan organized in little Egypt, why some were attracted to the group, and what led to the demise of the Second Ku Klux Klan in the region. This program is brought to you by the Daniel H. Brush Chapter of the DAR and is being held in person at the Carbondale Public Library and virtually on Zoom.
