Chester Community Unit School District 139 Board of Education met Feb. 15.

Here is the agenda provided by the board:

The Board of Education of Chester Community Unit School District No. 139 held a Regular Meeting on February 15, 2023, in High School FACS Classroom B217. President Trent Vasquez called the meeting to order at 6:05 p.m.

Davitz motioned, Mott seconded to enter into executive session at 6:06 p.m. for the appointment, employment, compensation, discipline, performance or dismissal of specific employees of the public body. Roll call vote. Ayes: Caraway, Davitz, Fricke, Malley, Mott, Vasquez. Nays: none. Motion carried.

Superintendent Kimberly Briggs exited executive session at 6:07 p.m. and returned in session at 6:43 p.m.

Caraway motioned, Davitz seconded to return to open session at 8:09 p.m. Roll call vote. Ayes: Caraway, Davitz, Fricke, Malley, Mott, Vasquez. Nays: none. Motion carried.

Pledge of Allegiance

Presentation by High School English teacher Mrs. Sara Hammel on improving the High School library.

Caraway motioned, Mott seconded to approve the consent agenda and items as listed. Roll call vote. Ayes: Caraway, Fricke, Davitz, Malley, Mott, Vasquez. Nays: none. Motion carried.

● January 19, 2023 regular meeting and executive session minutes;

● Bills in the amount of $203,527.32 and payroll in the amount of $519,290.41;

● Financial reports

High School Athletic Director’s Report

● Cheerleading competed in Sectional Competition on January 28th.

● Girls basketball season has ended.

● Boys basketball will begin regionals on February 18th.

● Scholar bowl record is currently 4-3. The Masonic Regional Tournament is on February 18th in Carterville and the conference match is on February 27th in Carlyle.

● Baseball, softball and track can officially begin practice on February 27th.

Grade School Athletic Director’s Report

● 2-8th grade and 2-7th grade boys basketball players will be playing in the Premier All-Star Game at Rend Lake College on March 12th.

● 5th/6th grade girls and boys basketball have 4 games left each to conclude the season.

● All other basketball games are finished, awards nights have been scheduled and uniforms collected.

● 20 volleyball games and 6 tournaments between A, B, and C teams.

● Track season will begin soon.

Maintenance Report

● Storage shed for the football field is ready to move. Will finish siding and the inside once it’s in place.

● 2 fuses blown in Diakin fresh air fan on DOAS unit 1 at the grade school. Still issues with DOAS unit 3. TMI guys are making changes and monitoring issues.

● Weight room door lock is fixed and new glass is being ordered.

Curriculum Report

● Freckle and Lalilo free trial has been extended until the end of April.

● Met with all Kindergarten through 3rd grade teachers to review the latest student score data. Will meet with 4th and 5th grade teachers in the near future.

● ACCESS testing is complete with all but one student.

● Entering IEP and ELL accommodations for the Spring IAR.

● Working on PSAT and SAT room assignments for the high school April 12th test date.

Grade School Principal’s Report

● Positive Give Back raised $294 this month for the BackStoppers of Randolph County.

● Students are participating in the American Heart Challenge this month.

● Parent teacher conferences February 16th & 17th.

● PTS fundraiser, “Celebrate Fitness”, is scheduled for April 20th with a rainout date of April 27th.

● The 5 Essential Survey for the state will be going out to students, staff, and parents/guardians.

● Student Council is planning for a school dance sometime in March or early April.

● Mrs. Heiman received the first promethean board. So far it’s been very impressive.

● End of the 3rd quarter is March 10th.

High School Principal’s Report

● December students of the month are Hanna Colvis and Trace Fricke.

● January students of the month are Maleia Absher and Clayton Andrews.

● The 2023 Southern Illinois Society for High School Achievement nominees are: Maleia Absher, Aidan Blechle, Sydney Collins, Hanna Colvis, Camrynn Howie.

● 2023 IHSA All-State Academic Team nominations are Jacob Handel and Camrynn Howie.

● Mrs. Hammel and her English IV class has been given a significant donation from Professor Sharp to help remodel and reimage the media center.

● Cafeteria tables and benches will arrive March 3rd.

● The old art and drama room storage has been emptied out and is in the early stages of installing a full kitchen and cabinets for our cross-cat program.

● Esports room is up and running. Practice started the first week of February and the first match is scheduled for February 16th.

● Country Financial donated $1,500 to improve the teacher workroom, media center and main office.

● Mrs. Brown organized two on-site professional development days. The topics were co-teaching and differentiated learning.

● HIVE organized a tailgating get together on February 10th before the home boys basketball game.

● FFA week is scheduled for February 21st-24th.

● Master schedule for next year is complete and about 90% of students are placed in the schedule.

● Currently looking for two dates to hold “Soaring Stinger Ceremony” and a “Freshman Preview Night”.

Superintendent’s Report

● Jacket Care program continues to grow. The hospital is scheduled to do First Aide Training with Jacket workers on Thursday.

● The auditor was in our district this week. They hope to be done this month.

● Completed 471 for Erate to upgrade the wiring in both buildings to CAT6 for technology.

● Updated building insurance for Grade School and High School. Insurance is recommending an appraisal.

● Proposal for a new secure vestibule at Chester High School on the west side of Jurgens Gym.

● Proposal for the modernization of all elevators. They are out of date and unable to order parts so when they need work done, they are having to piece items together to make them work. It’s becoming very expensive.

Caraway motioned, Davitz seconded to approve the seniority list for certified and non-certified employees. Upon roll call, all members voted aye. Motion carried.

Davitz motioned, Malley seconded to approve the updated mileage reimbursement form. Roll call vote. Ayes: Mott, Malley, Davitz, Fricke, Caraway, Vasquez. Nays: none. Motion carried.

Malley motioned, Caraway seconded to accept the proposal from Baysinger for a new vestibule at the high school for $125,580.00. Roll call vote. Ayes: Caraway, Davitz, Malley, Mott, Fricke, Vasquez. Nays: none. Motion carried.

Mott motioned, Caraway seconded to accept the proposal for the concrete handicap area at the high school in the amount of $32,780.00. Roll call vote. Ayes: Davitz, Malley, Mott, Fricke, Caraway, Vasquez. Nays: none. Motion carried.

Mott motioned, Caraway seconded to table the proposal on modernization of elevators at both schools. Upon roll call, all members voted aye. Motion carried.

Davitz motioned, Malley seconded to approve the purchase of Promethean Boards, to replace Smartboards, in the amount of $265,697.84. Roll call vote. Ayes: Caraway, Fricke, Davitz, Malley, Mott, Vasquez. Nays: none. Motion carried.

Malley motioned, Mott seconded to approve to employ Sara Dillman as Grade School Nurse at $18.35/hr effective August 14, 2023. Roll call vote: Mott, Malley, Davitz, Fricke, Caraway, Vasquez. Nays: none. Motion carried.

Caraway motioned, Mott seconded to approve to employ James Juenger as Esports sponsor for the 2022-2023 school year. Roll call vote. Ayes: Caraway, Fricke, Davitz, Malley, Mott, Vasquez. Nays: none. Motion carried.

Fricke motioned, Mott seconded to accept the resignation of Chris Toledo as High School Varsity Boys Head Golf Coach. Upon roll call all members voted aye. Motion carried.

Mott motioned, Fricke seconded to accept the resignation of Courtney Hecht as Grade School Head Track Coach. Upon roll call all members voted aye. Motion carried.

Davitz motioned, Mott seconded to approve to employ Chris Wingerter as High School Assistant Baseball Coach for the 2023 season. Roll call vote. Ayes: Caraway, Fricke, Davitz, Malley, Mott, Vasquez. Nays: none. Motion carried.

Malley motioned, Mott seconded to approve Matt Davitz as High School Baseball Volunteer Coach for the 2023 season. Upon roll call vote, 5 aye, Davitz abstain, motion carried.

Fricke motioned, Malley seconded to approve to employ Danielle Draves as Grade School Head Track Coach for the 2023 season. Roll call vote. Ayes: Mott, Malley, Davitz, Fricke, Caraway, Vasquez. Nays: none. Motion carried.

Motion by Malley and seconded by Mott to adjourn the meeting at 9:47 p.m. Upon roll call, all members voted aye. Motion carried.
