City of Waterloo Personnel Commission met June 19

City of Waterloo Personnel Commission met June 19.

Here are the minutes provided by the commission:

Officials Present: Matt Buettner, Jim Trantham, Kyle Buettner, Russ Row, Gary Most, Joel Vogt, Mechelle

Childers, Stan Darter, Jim Hopkins

1. Petitions by Citizens on Non-Agenda Items: None

2. Community Relations Coordinator Contract – Mayor Darter presented handouts and reasoning for the request to increase compensation for this position, currently held by Sarah Deutch. Rationale was due to additional responsibilities being added to the role. Gary Most questioned the specific items, which the Mayor clarified. Based on the added duties, the increase of pay to $78,000 was proposed. This increase would also cover the annual raise for the year. Motion was made by Kyle Buettner to approve, seconded by Gary Most. Motion passed 5-0.

3. Comments: Brief discussion on planning to replace City Works Director Tim Birk, who is tentatively looking to retire in October of 2024. Several options available for what this job may look like in the future, however will require additional discussions due to complexity of the role. Russ Row also brought up a comment he received from a citizen around how the city is using gaming money, and that the citizen feels this should not be looked at as “fun money” for the city to spend as they please. Discussed a possible review of current ordinance to add other ways this money can be used in the future.

Motion to adjourn by Alderman Row, seconded by Alderman Kyle Buettner. Passed 5-0.

Meeting adjourned at 7:20.

Minutes submitted by Personnel Committee Chair Matt Buettner.
