Aledo Community Unit School District 201 Board met June 20.

CALL TO ORDER

On June 20, 2023, at 6:02 p.m. President Adina Hoover called to order the regular meeting of the Community Unit School District 201 Board of Education.

Roll Call

Members present: Adina Hoover, Whitney Rogers, Kevin Marren, Angela Steketee, Leah Conover, Carlos Hevia

Members absent: Jessica Radogno

Also present: Superintendent Kevin Carey; Superintendent-elect Jack Baldermann; Business Manager Anthony Ruelli; and the Superintendent’s Administrative Assistant, Shannon Cossairt.

Pledge of Allegiance

President Hoover led the assembly in the Pledge of Allegiance.

RECOGNITION Retiree Recognition

The following people thanked Superintendent Carey for his years of service: Dan Charleston, Laura Coyle, Joel Price, Kevin Weck, Lindsay Pietrzak, Amy Quattrone, Nadine Norris, Jack Baldermann, Carlos Hevia, Kevin Marren, Leah Conover, Angela Steketee, Whitney Rogers, and Adina Hoover.

CLOSED SESSION

Motion by Ms. Steketee, second by Ms. Conover, to enter closed session to discuss personnel issues and purchase or lease of property.

Ayes: Rogers, Steketee, Hevia, Marren, Conover, Hoover

Nays: None.

Motion Carried.

The Board moved to closed session at 6:32 p.m.

The Board returned to open session at 7:09 p.m.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES May 16, 2023

Motion by Mr. Hevia, second by Ms. Steketee, to approve the minutes of the May 16, 2023 regular meeting of the Board of Education, as presented.

Ayes: Hoover, Rogers, Marren, Steketee, Conover, Hevia

Nays: None.

Motion Carried.

May 16, 2023 Closed Session

Motion by Mr. Marren, second by Mr. Hevia, to approve the minutes of the closed session of the May 16, 2023, regular meeting of the Board of Education, as presented.

Ayes: Hoover, Rogers, Marren, Steketee, Conover, Hevia

Nays: None.

Motion Carried.

June 6, 2023

Motion by Mr. Marren, second by Ms. Conover, to approve the minutes of the June 6, 2023, special meeting of the Board of Education, as presented.

Ayes: Hoover, Rogers, Marren, Steketee, Conover, Hevia

Nays: None.

Motion Carried.

INFORMATION/DISCUSSION

Monthly Financial Statements for May 2023

Anthony Ruelli, CSBO, gave the Board an update on the District’s financials for May 2023. His update included a short review of revenue and expenditures to date. All documents can be found in BoardDocs.

Strategic Plan Update

Dr. Nadine Norris, Director of Technology, Teaching and Learning, gave the Board an update on the Strategic Plan. She reviewed the following information:

• Long Range Goals

• Curriculum Alignment

• Achievement Scores and Student Growth

Dr. Norris answered questions from the Board regarding the long-range goals and graduation rates.

Amendment to Benchmark Curriculum Materials Contract

The Board had approved a contract with Benchmark for some new materials earlier this year. Dr. Norris explained to the Board the ESSER Funds can be used for multi-year contracts. Dr. Norris wanted to update the Board on the change and cost savings since their approval of the curriculum.

Consultant for Audit and Evaluation Process for Principals

Superintendent-elect Jack Baldermann gave the Board information regarding the contract to hire a consultant for the upcoming school year. The consultant, Jeannie Spiller, is bringing many years of experience to the District and will be working with administrators to help them visit classrooms and work with teachers to improve student learning. The contract will be presented at the July 25, 2023 meeting for approval.

Elementary Summer Band Camp

Mr. Jon Kostal currently works with our 5th grade band students at Manning. Since Mr. Kostal has started our fifth-grade band numbers are higher than they have ever been. Mr. Kostal would like to request to offer a summer band camp for incoming 5th grade students. The camp would offer an opportunity for students to try different instruments prior to the school year. He will also have some high school students come in to share their own band experience. The Board will vote on the camp later in the meeting.

Approval of Authorization to Pay Additional June/July Bills for Fiscal Year 2023

Motion by Mr. Hevia, second by Ms. Conover, to authorize and direct the Treasurer to pay any additional bills received in June/July 2023 that have been budgeted for in the current fiscal year.

Ayes: Hevia, Marren, Conover, Hoover, Rogers, Steketee

Nays: None.

Adoption of 2023-2024 Routine Business Office Resolutions

Motion by Ms. Conover, second by Mr. Marren, to approve the adoption of the routine 2023-2024 Business Office Resolutions, as presented.

Ayes: Marren Conover, Hoover, Rogers, Steketee, Hevia

Nays: None.

Motion carried.

Approval of 2024-2024 Regular Transportation Contract Extension

Motion by Mr. Marren, second by Ms. Rogers, to approve the 1- year contract extension for the 2023-2024 school year for the regular education transportation services with Westway Coach, Inc., as presented.

Ayes: Conover, Hoover, Rogers, Steketee, Hevia, Marren

Nays: None.

Motion carried.

Motion by Ms. Steketee, second by Ms. Conover, to approve the Elementary Summer Band Camp, as presented.

Superintendent Carey shared registration information with families. Online registration will open on July 19, 2023. There will be in person registration on July 24, 2023.

Superintendent Carey also took time to thank everyone. This is his last meeting before he retires on June 30, 2023.
